I exhaled an aggravated sigh and powered down the dimly lit hallway, grumbling under my breath, “Thank you, Edward.” “Your dress is on your bed!” he called after me as I walked around the corner. Yeah, I highly doubted Delia Crist, my mother’s best friend and the matriarch of Thunder Bay, our small East Coast community, was spending her precious time looking for me herself. ![]() I turned and continued up the stairs, hearing the soft music coming from the party out on the terrace. “You can get back to your important duties now.” I broke out in a smile and leaned over the bannister, planting a quick kiss on his forehead. “Has she really?” I eyed him with mock astonishment. I shot up my eyebrows and immediately stopped, turning around to peer at him over the railing. Crist has been looking for you,” he pointed out. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied the butler rounding the corner, but I didn’t stop. ![]() Pushing up the sleeves of my lightweight sweater, I hurried through the front door of the Crist house and speed-walked across the foyer, heading straight for the stairs. 7/5/2023 0 Comments The reptile room book![]() ![]() ![]() It’s their Uncle Monty (full name: Montgomery Montgomery). The Reptile Room, number 2 of the Lemony Snicket books, has to do with the children, whose parents died in a fire shortly before the opening pages of the number 1 book, finally, finally finding someone nice to take care of them. What I’m more interested here, though, is why Lemony Snicket’s 13 books about the ever-so-many Unfortunate Events that befall the Baudelaire children are so much fun for readers, particularly children. The sheer ridiculousness of it all - that Sunny could actually mean all that Lemony Snicket says she means, in this case, about “a loathsome situation” - is what makes this repeated trope in the Lemony Snicket books funny. ![]() As an infant with only four very sharp teeth, she says what seem like nonsense syllables, and author Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler, in real life) explains what she means, usually a fairly long, complex statement, serious and sober. It’s always funny when Sunny has something to say. “Tadu,” Sunny murmured solemnly, which probably meant something along the lines of “It’s a loathsome situation in which we find ourselves.” “And,” Klaus continued, “once he gets his hands on it, he plans to kill us.” Midway through The Reptile Room, they are discussing the sad fact that the nefarious count wants to get ahold of their family’s fortune. The Baudelaire orphans find themselves yet again in an unfortunate event - in the clutches of Count Olaf. ![]() ![]() ![]() Princess Wilhelmina is ready for her crown, but declaring herself queen means war. ![]() This epic fantasy duology is perfect for fans of Graceling by Kristin Cashore, The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson, and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. "My body spasmed and the back of my head rebounded sharply off the bedstead. Although we are with Fitz in his struggle, Robin Hobb does not shirk from showing us his failings as a human being and how his actions also hurt others. The books narrative has also matured and there is a distinctly darker feel to this middle novel. The main character Fitz has grown and is now a teenager. The effects have left him prone to fits and spasms and in this state he must travel back to Buckkeep to face his tormentor and poisoner, Prince Regal. The book begins precisely where we left off and FitzChivalry is slowly recovering from the poision administered to him. "We are here, Fitz, you and I, to change the future of the world." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Honestly I didn’t like (one little bit) that comment, for two reasons: One, clearly he only mentioned Marvel titles, what? All DC material is so adult oriented?! Sure, I was amazed how “mature” was the brawl showing none strategy against Darkseid in the first storyach of New 52’s Justice League. Maybe my only humble critique is that when the Master King did a comment about how The Sandman is a comic book series suggested to mature readers and that if the readers wouldn’t understand the stories, they should get back to Spider-Man, X-Men or Fantastic Four. ![]() Indeed it’s impressive the list of personalities that they have figured so far in the introductions to each The Sandman TPBs, and having Stephen King here is even more impressive. That first quote isn’t from the pages of the volume World’s End but from the introduction written by none other than Stephen King (that I guess you may have heard that he has written some books here and there).
